I can never manage to get a photo of all the store gates down at the same time during the day. Maybe one day, but for now this will have to do.

The full poem reads:
“Every crystal falling, turns the water of the eye, folding bright shapes, a dreamer stays high, casting sculptures, myths and smiles vast in the front of each wave, handing down letters, flowers by your bed and a light surrounding your every dance.” – Signed by the initials, RDK.

The longer I live here, the more I realize it. How every little thing I see on the streets is what makes NYC the place it is. The writing on the walls, the people in the streets, the buildings, the cars, the noise; all of them add up to be the energy and feeling that is New York. Talk about the whole being greater than the sum of the parts.

Try and remember this building, you might be seeing more of it this Spring/Summer.

Well 2012 is finally here. Hoping everyone had a great NYE and is enjoying the new year thus far. We’ll continue to showcase the designs from our newest collection and today’s post will also give you a bit of an inside look at the design process and how we like to use as much original imagery as possible.

The RED, BLACK & BLUES Tee is printed on a premium, slim-fit crew neck tee and features a vintage American flag graphic with a bold shout to the country’s two busiest cities. Printed on 100% combed cotton and also features a top back print of our ‘Swords’ logo.

Now usually I wouldn’t share this much of our design process on this blog but this design is a personal favorite of mine and wanted to show you the thoughts and work that went into creating it. As most of you reading this blog know I recently moved from my hometown of Los Angeles over to the East coast, and am currently living in New York City. While Southern California has always had a heavy influence on the aesthetic of the brand I knew it would only be natural to for some hints of life NYC to start to make their way into a few of our upcoming designs. LA and NY are two of my favorite cities in the country and definitely wanted to incorporate that into a design. Earlier this year we shot a friend of ours to use in the design.

The hardest past when you’re shooting your own stuff to use in designs is that you usually have a ton of options. We had quite a few poses and photos to choose from but ended up going with the above. It’s always cool to see the process and progression of a design, especially taking a photo like this and having the end result come out how it did.

The RED, BLACK & BLUES Tee comes in either White, Heather Grey, or Navy and is available in our online shop.

The Laughing Heart by Charles Bukowski is one of my favorite poems of all time. It’s something that has always inspired and motivated me when I need it. It’s a surprisingly uplifting poem from a man known for his honest, and harshly realistic style of writing.

“You can’t beat death but
You can beat death in life, sometimes.
And the more often you learn to do it,
The more light there will be.”

Based on a line from a Charles Bukowski poem, this design is a reminder to that sometimes the best way to feel alive is to live life without holding back. Pursue your own personal pursuit of happiness.

From his work and his personality it was obvious that Bukowski was one thing, honest. One thing he said that always stuck with me was his view on finding creativity and inspiration when it came to writing. “We work too hard. We try too hard. Don’t try. Don’t work. It’s there. It’s been looking right at us, aching to kick out of the closed womb.” I think whether you’re a designer, musician, artist, writer, etc this is a statement that we can all relate to. While most of us can’t pinpoint what our creative driving force is, but we all know that we can’t force it.

The LIFE BEATS DEATH Tee is printed on a premium, slim-fit crew neck tee and features a gritty texture highlighted by bold text that reads “You Can Beat Death In Life”. Printed on 100% combed cotton and also features a top back print of our ‘Swords’ logo.

This was a big season for us. Not only did we have a change of plans in how this brand operates (moving to the East coast shook things up way more than I thought they would) but at the same time we also made a push into releasing a variety of new products. One of those being our IMPRINT Jersey.

A variation of this season’s ‘IMPRINT’ style, an introduction to our new monogram styled logo but keeping it familiar with our “Genuine Goods” tagline. The detail and quality on this Jersey is on point, definitely a must have from this season. As a brand we are always trying to progress and have had our sights set on releasing a product like this for quite some time so it was great to see it all come together.

The IMPRINT JERSEY is printed on a premium polyester/cotton blended jersey with a rib knit color and features a front hit of our Monogram logo with a back print of our ‘Imprint’ design. Also features contrast color raglan sleeves with two contrast sleeve stripes, and double needle hemmed sleeves and bottom. Available in Black or Maroon.

In addition to the jersey, we thought the design would look great on a hoodie, so we went ahead with that.

As with every release we’ll give you guys an inside look at each of the styles, first up is our ‘CX.’ Snapback.

The ‘CX.’ Snapback features our signature CX. logo on the front, as well as a full logo embroidery hit on the back. Made of a Melton Wool Blend and lined with black satin, this cap is perfect for the fall and winter seasons. The cap also features a black canvas brim, as well as a single contrasting sea-foam green eyelet on the back of the cap.

This was our first hat we’ve done as a brand and it was definitely an entire different process than screen printing shirts. Truth be told, this was actually the first item from the new line that was ready; we’ve had the full run of hats since September, way before we began production on all the shirts, knits and fleece featured in the line. Making this hat was definitely a long process, one that started earlier this year and took a few rounds of samples until we got it right, but I couldn’t be happier with the finished product.

All in the details. Since this was our first hat we wanted to do more than just slap our logo on a blank hat. We went for a blend of Grey and Charcoal wool, and a black canvas bill – opposed to the standard twill. We also had the inside lined with black satin and accented the cap with a single, contrasting eyelet in our sea-foam green color. Followers of this brand will definitely recognize that this is a color that we often use in designs and creatively within the brand, from season to season.
